Course description

Portable power tools are essential for many jobs in the workplace. However, if not used properly, they can cause serious injuries, including cuts, burns, electric shock, and amputation, resulting from flying debris, electric hazards, and fire explosions.

This training course discusses safe work practices and guidelines to follow when using portable power tools on the job to help prevent injuries and keep the workplace safe.

Compliance:
To supplement this training course, your employer may provide additional training on recommended best practices for working safely with portable power tools, including:

• Site-specific tools and equipment to be used at the workplace;
• Hands-on practice to make sure you know how to operate and maintain equipment, as well as how to report damaged equipment;
• Hazard communication training on the potential chemical exposure from power tools used for grinding and sanding operations or tasks that use solvents;
• Noise and hearing conservation training due to the loud environment in the workplace resulting from grinding, sawing, and sanding operations;
• Vibration and ergonomics training due to using and handling hand power tools; and
• Basic electric safety training to prevent injury from electrical hazards.

Learning objectives:

At the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
  • Recognize the unique hazards of operating different portable power tools
  • Follow safe operating procedures that reduce the risk of injury
  • Use and adjust tool guards effectively and correctly
  • Demonstrate hazard recognition, and be able to correct unsafe conditions
