Hydrogen Sulfide Safety

Course description

Hydrogen sulfide, also known as H2S, is an extremely hazardous substance. It has the potential to significantly harm a person’s health and cause great damage to the workplace. If workers may be potentially exposed to this very dangerous substance, they need to recognize the dangers it presents, as well as the precautions they must take to prevent accidents, injuries, and illnesses. Not only is hydrogen sulfide highly flammable and thus a fire and explosion hazard, but it’s also a serious health hazard. Hydrogen sulfide exposure can make a person sick, and in high enough concentrations, it could even kill someone. Therefore, employees need to recognize the conditions in which hydrogen sulfide is present, be familiar with its hazards, and know what to do to protect themselves from exposure to hydrogen sulfide in the workplace.

Compliance:
To supplement this training course, employers must provide employees with the following to comply with 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.1200(h)(1) and 29 CFR 1910.119(g)(1)(i):
• Site-specific information, including information about the facility’s operations and work areas where hydrogen sulfide is present, and monitoring and exposure control measures implemented at the facility to detect hydrogen sulfide and protect employees from overexposure.
• Training on the company- or facility-specific Hazard Communication (HazCom) program, including where employees can access the program, the required list(s) of chemical products containing hazardous chemicals like hydrogen sulfide, and the safety data sheets (SDSs) for those products; and an explanation of the SDSs and the labels on shipped containers of hazardous chemical products, as well as the labeling system used in the workplace.
• Respiratory protection training that covers the specifics of the workplace respiratory protection program, including information about the type of respirators that will be worn by employees, if applicable.
