Generated by industrial processes like plating and pickling passivation, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is a man-made form of the metal chromium and can be found in the form of chromate, chromic acid, sodium bichromate dehydrate, and cadmium chromate. This course discusses how employees may be exposed to Cr(VI) in the workplace, the potential health hazards from overexposure to Cr(VI), and the work practices that will protect employees from this very toxic chemical. This course is intended for employees whose work involves exposure or potential exposure to this substance.

Compliance
To supplement this training course, employers must provide employees with the following to comply with 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.1200(h)(1):
• Site-specific information, including information about the facility’s operations and work areas where Cr(VI) is present, and monitoring and exposure control measures implemented at the facility to detect Cr(VI) and protect employees from overexposure;
• Training on the company- or facility-specific Hazard Communication (HazCom) program, including where employees can access the program, the required list(s) of chemical products containing hazardous chemicals like Cr(VI), and the safety data sheets (SDSs) for those products, as well as an explanation of the SDSs and the labels on shipped containers of hazardous chemical products and the labeling system used in the workplace; and
• Respiratory protection training that covers the specifics of the workplace respiratory protection program, including information about the types of respirators that will be worn by employees, if applicable.
