HAZWOPER: First Responder Awareness Level
Course description
Any worksite that uses or stores hazardous substances may be at risk of an uncontrolled release or spill where workers are nearby, and a response to the emergency is required to prevent injury or other loss.
This course provides emergency response awareness information for any worker who is likely to witness or discover an uncontrolled release or spill of a hazardous substance and who, in the course of normal duties, may be the first person at the scene to initiate a response by notifying the proper authorities.

Learning objectives:
At the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:- Describe hazardous substances and the risks associated with them if they are released or spilled during an incident
- Recall the potential outcomes associated with an uncontrolled release of a hazardous substance
- Identify hazardous substances at work, and recognize their presence during an emergency
- Describe the first responder awareness person’s role and response actions in the facility’s emergency response plan, or ERP, and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s, or DOT’s, Emergency Response Guidebook
- Explain how to make appropriate emergency notifications to authorities
