Course description

This training course covers the principal elements of the regulatory requirements for how workers who generate hazardous waste in laboratories must manage that waste in the lab. The course describes the different types of hazardous waste and how they must be identified, stored, inspected, and documented, as well as the actions lab personnel should take to protect themselves and the workplace from the dangers of hazardous waste.

Learning objectives:

At the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
  • Identify hazardous wastes as characteristic hazardous wastes, listed hazardous wastes, or universal wastes
  • Recognize the sources for obtaining information about hazardous substances in their laboratory
  • Choose appropriate containers for storing and shipping hazardous wastes and label them properly
  • Distinguish between central and satellite accumulation storage areas and their requirements
  • Recognize overexposure signs and symptoms of chemicals
  • Protect themselves through best management practices (BMPs), personal protective equipment (PPE), engineering controls, and safe work practices
