Protecting physical and mental well-being

Traditional occupational safety and health protection programs primarily concentrate on ensuring work is safe and that workers are protected from the harms that arise from work itself. However, they don’t place enough emphasis on how job-related factors can impact mental health and lead to stress, fatigue, burnout, and substance use. In addition, it isn’t often discussed how employees who endure job-related factors with a negative impact on their well-being are at a substantially higher risk of poor health and injury.

For example, research has found a relationship between organizations being downsized and an increase in workplace injuries and accidents. In addition, high levels of fatigue are linked to an increased safety risk, such as a crash or near miss due to one’s own or a coworker’s fatigue.
