How effective is your PPE program?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines personal protective equipment (PPE) as equipment that is worn to minimize exposure to hazards that can cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses. PPE can include equipment for respiratory protection, eye and face protection, foot protection, hand protection, hearing protection, head protection, and more. OSHA requires employers to provide PPE to workers when it is necessary to protect them from injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.
A PPE program should be implemented in the workplace to discuss job hazards; the selection, use, and maintenance of PPE; and the training of employees.
Ensuring PPE program success
If you struggle to get your employees to comply with PPE protocols, this may be a sign that your PPE program needs work. But don’t worry, you’re not alone. According to recent survey data, 68% of EHS professionals cited employee employee adoption as a barrier to implementing a PPE program.
In order for a PPE program to be successful, it needs active commitment and participation from all levels—senior management, supervisors, and workers.
