The Control of Hazardous Energy, known as “lockout/tagout” and related hazardous energy control measures are designed to protect employees from injuries due to unexpected start-up of machinery or equipment or the release of stored hazardous energy during servicing and maintenance operations.
This refresher training is for “affected employees”, or operators of machines and other employees in the area where an authorized employee may conduct service or maintenance on energized equipment.

To supplement this training course and comply with 29 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.147, employers must provide employees with site specific training on the recognition of applicable hazardous energy sources, the type and magnitude of the energy available in the workplace, and the methods and means necessary for energy isolation and control.

It does not cover the protection measures for normal production operations-that is, while the equipment is still running. This training is also required if you work in an area where servicing or maintenance of machinery or equipment is being performed, even though you do not operate the machinery or equipment. For example, material handlers and welders who routinely work in areas near machinery or equipment during servicing or maintenance operations are considered affected employees.

Before performing this work, you need to have the knowledge and skills necessary to safely control hazardous energy and perform lockout and tagout of machines and equipment.
This session will train you to perform the responsibilities of an “authorized person.” An authorized person is an employee who services or maintains machinery and equipment. As an authorized person, you will be able to recognize hazardous energy sources, understand responsibilities to other employees, and control hazardous energy with lockout/tagout.
